Full-height cedar or treated privacy fence — the standard for backyards across the metro.
The most common fence we build, and the one people get wrong most often. A privacy fence is six feet of solid wall catching every gust of Kansas wind — it's a sail. What holds it up isn't the boards, it's post depth and bracing at the corners and gates.
We build in western red cedar or pressure-treated pine. Cedar costs more up front, weathers to grey on its own, and resists rot without treatment. Treated pine is cheaper and holds up fine, but wants a stain or seal within a season to stop it cupping and greying unevenly.
Style matters for more than looks. Standard privacy sits board-to-board with no gaps. Shadowbox alternates boards front and back so it looks finished from both sides — worth knowing if the fence faces a street or your neighbour's yard, and often what an HOA is asking for. Spaced picket lets wind through, which means less strain on posts on an exposed lot.

Cedar or treated pine — which should I pick?
Cedar if you want it to look after itself and don't mind it weathering to silver-grey. Treated pine if budget matters more and you'll stain it within the first year. Both last a long time when the posts are set right; posts are what fails first, not the boards.
Which side faces my neighbour?
Convention is the finished side faces out, posts and rails face your yard. Some HOAs require it. If you'd rather have the finished side in, shadowbox looks the same from both sides and solves the argument.
Does my HOA need to approve it?
In most Johnson County and Kansas City metro subdivisions, yes. They typically specify height, material, style and sometimes stain colour. Get approval in writing before we build — it's the single most common cause of a fence having to come back down.
