Vinyl costs more than wood on day one and less than wood over fifteen years. There's nothing to stain, nothing to rot, no splinters, no boards to replace where a sprinkler has been soaking one end of the fence for a decade. You wash it with a hose.
It comes as full privacy panel, ranch rail and picket, most commonly white or tan. The trade-off is honest: it looks like vinyl. It won't weather to the silver-grey some people specifically want from cedar, and a damaged panel gets replaced rather than repaired.
The thing worth knowing in this climate is that vinyl moves. It expands in July heat and contracts hard in January, so panels are built to float within the rails rather than being locked solid. Fitted too tight, it buckles in summer. That's an install detail, not a material fault — and it's why post setting and spacing matter as much here as on a wood fence.

Is vinyl actually cheaper long term?
Usually, if you're staying put. It's more up front than treated pine and comparable to or above cedar, but you never stain it and you're not replacing rotted boards. Over ten to fifteen years it tends to come out ahead. Over three years it doesn't.
Does it crack in the cold?
Quality vinyl fence is formulated with impact modifiers for exactly this climate. It can crack if something hits it hard in deep cold, and a struck panel is replaced rather than patched — but it doesn't simply go brittle over a normal Kansas winter.
Will it go yellow?
Modern vinyl fence includes UV inhibitors and holds colour far better than the early product that gave vinyl its reputation. Some very gradual change over many years is normal; visible yellowing within a few seasons is a sign of cheap material.
