Ornamental fencing is what people mean when they say wrought iron, but almost nothing installed today is actual wrought iron. Modern panels are powder-coated steel or aluminium: the same vertical-picket look, a fraction of the maintenance, and no rust bleeding down onto your concrete.
It's the usual choice where you want a boundary that doesn't block a view — a front yard, a pool surround, a garden edge, a property frontage where a solid fence would look like a compound. Steel is stronger and better where something might hit it. Aluminium won't rust at all and suits pool enclosures where it's permanently around water and chlorine.
Pool fencing is its own thing. Barrier requirements are set by local code and typically govern minimum height, maximum gap between pickets, ground clearance, and self-closing self-latching gates with the latch above a set height. Get the code confirmed for your jurisdiction before anyone builds — a pool fence that fails inspection has to be redone.

Steel or aluminium?
Steel for strength where the fence might take a knock. Aluminium where rust is the enemy — poolside above all, since it will never rust regardless of splash or chlorine. Both come powder-coated and look near identical once installed.
Will it meet pool code?
It can, but the code is local and specific — height, picket gap, ground clearance and self-closing latching gates all get inspected. Tell us it's a pool fence at quote stage and we'll build to your jurisdiction's barrier requirements rather than guessing.
Does it need painting?
No. That's the main reason it replaced real wrought iron. Powder coating is baked on, and normal upkeep is washing it off occasionally. Real iron needed scraping and repainting every few years.
